So, you have decided that a disc granulator is the right choice for your business. You know it produces the beautiful, spherical pellets you want. You are ready to move forward. But then you look at a specification sheet. You see models like ZL-1500, ZL-2500, and ZL-3600. They have different diameters, different motor powers, and different capacity ratings. This is the moment where many of my clients pause. They ask me, “How do I choose the most suitable disc granulator model for my specific organic fertilizer production line?”
This is a critical question. Choosing the right model is just as important as choosing the right type of machine. The wrong choice can lead to major problems. As an expert at Fude Machinery, my goal is to make this decision simple and clear for you. I will walk you through a step-by-step process. We will look at how to determine your real needs. This will help you select a model that is not too small and not too big, but just right for your business success.

This article will help you understand:
Choosing the wrong model size is a costly mistake. It can hurt your business in two main ways.
What happens if you choose a model that is too small?
This is a very common problem for growing businesses. You buy a machine that fits your current needs, but your business grows faster than expected. Your granulator cannot keep up with the demand. It becomes a bottleneck for your entire production line. Your composting system prepares the material, but it has to wait. Your packaging machine is idle because there are not enough pellets. You miss sales opportunities because you simply cannot produce enough fertilizer.
What happens if you choose a model that is too big?
This might seem like a safer option, but it has its own problems. A much larger machine has a higher purchase price, so your initial investment is bigger. It also consumes more electricity. If you are only using it at 30% of its capacity, you are wasting energy on every ton you produce. This increases your production costs and reduces your profit margin. The granulation effect can also be less effective if the machine is too empty. It is designed to work with a certain volume of material rolling inside.
Everything starts with one simple question: How many tons of finished granular fertilizer do you need to produce per hour? This number, your required hourly capacity, is the single most important factor in choosing the right disc granulator model. All other decisions will be based on this number. Before you can even look at our models, you need to have a clear and realistic answer to this question. Let’s work out how to calculate it accurately.
Calculating your required capacity is not a guess. It is a simple calculation based on your business goals. Follow these three steps.
Step 1: Determine Your Total Production Target
First, decide how much fertilizer you want to produce over a longer period. Is your goal to produce 10,000 tons per year? Or maybe 50 tons per day? Start with your main business target. For this example, let’s say your goal is to produce 30 tons of granular fertilizer per day.
Step 2: Determine Your Daily Operating Hours
Next, be realistic about how many hours your plant will actually run each day. A factory does not run for 24 hours straight. You have to account for shift changes, employee breaks, daily machine cleaning, and maintenance checks. A typical, efficient plant might run for 8 to 10 hours of active production per day. Let’s use 8 hours for our example.
Step 3: Do the Simple Math
Now, you just divide your daily target by your operating hours.
So, for this example, you need a disc granulator that can comfortably and reliably produce at least 3.75 tons of pellets every hour. This is your target number.
Now that you have your target number, you can look at our models and find the right match. Below is a simplified table of some of our popular disc granulator models. It shows the diameter of the disc and the typical capacity range for organic fertilizer.
Model Number | Disc Diameter (meters) | Rated Motor Power (kW) | Capacity Range (tons/hour) | Best For You If Your Need Is… |
---|---|---|---|---|
ZL-1800 | 1.8 | 5.5 | 0.5 – 1 | Small-scale or startup plants |
ZL-2500 | 2.5 | 7.5 | 2 – 4 | Growing small to medium businesses |
ZL-3200 | 3.2 | 15 | 3 – 6 | Our Example: 3.75 tph |
ZL-3600 | 3.6 | 18.5 | 5 – 8 | Established medium-scale plants |
ZL-4200 | 4.2 | 22 | 7 – 10 | Medium to large-scale operations |
ZL-5000 | 5.0 | 37 | 10 – 15 | Large-scale industrial production |
Expert Tip: Do not choose a model where your target capacity is at the maximum limit. For our example of 3.75 tph, the ZL-2500 model (2-4 tph capacity) could work, but it would be running at its absolute maximum. This leaves no room for error or future growth. The machine would be under constant stress.
The much better choice is the ZL-3200 model. Its capacity range is 3-6 tph. Our target of 3.75 tph falls comfortably in the lower-middle part of this range. This means the machine will run efficiently without being overworked. It also gives you the ability to increase your production to 5 or 6 tph in the future without needing to buy a new machine.
Capacity is the main factor, but there are a few other things to think about to make a truly perfect choice.
The capacity ratings in the table are based on typical composted organic materials. However, the density and flowability of your specific material can have an impact.
A bigger machine needs more physical space. A ZL-5000 model is much larger than a ZL-1800 model. Before you decide, measure the area in your factory where the granulator will be placed. Remember to leave space around it for operators to work safely and for maintenance access. At Fude Machinery, when we design a complete organic fertilizer production line , we create a detailed layout drawing for you. This ensures that every machine, including the disc granulator, fits perfectly.
Think about where you want your business to be in three to five years. Do you plan to enter new markets or increase your sales? If you expect significant growth, it is often smarter to invest in a slightly larger machine now. Buying one ZL-3600 model today is usually cheaper than buying a ZL-2500 today and then another machine in three years. This kind of forward-thinking is a mark of a successful business.
Question 1: My calculated capacity is right between two models. Which one should I choose?
My strong recommendation is to choose the larger model. The extra initial cost is often small compared to the cost of lost production or needing to upgrade later. It gives you a safety margin and a path for growth.
Question 2: Does the motor power really matter?
Yes, it is very important. The motor needs to be powerful enough to rotate the disc when it is loaded with tons of material. We have carefully calculated and matched the correct motor power to each model size. A weak motor would stall under load, making the machine useless.
Question 3: Does the disc granulator come with the water spray system?
Yes, all our Fude Machinery disc granulators come equipped with a complete water spray system. This includes the pipes, valves, and nozzles needed for the granulation process.
Choosing the right disc granulator model is a straightforward process when you approach it systematically. Do not let the numbers on a spec sheet confuse you.
By following these steps, you can confidently choose a disc granulator that will be a productive and profitable asset for your business for many years to come.
